A taxi cab gone berserk smashing a UN diplomat’s parked car in Midtown yesterday and then leaped onto the sidewalk, pinned down a petrified woman against a building, authorities and witnesses said.
Witnesses puffed as the woman twisted in pain when her right leg was sandwiched between the yellow taxi’s front left wheel and the wall of a Duane Reade drugstore.
“The cab just went out of control, he crashed into the corner of the building,” witness Tyrone Tyler, 40, told The Post. “They took the lady who got pinned to the hospital. Two separate EMS trucks came.”
The 42-year-old woman and an injured 50-year-old male pedestrian were both rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, officials said.
The accident happened at 1:13 p.m. on the corner of East 43rd Street and Third Avenue, the reports said.
The cab first struck the rear end of the parked Toyota which was owned by Dominican Ambassador Juan R. Avila Ceballos before jumping onto the sidewalk. The taxi then nearly hit a public pay phone and pinioned the female pedestrian.
“I was surprised when I got a call from the Police Department,” Avila said. “I was in my office eating lunch. I don’t know how the taxi driver hit a parked car.”
The cab driver remained inside his vehicle as rescue workers worked to free the woman.
