Minnesota Timberwolves rookie starting point guard Ricky Rubio has officially been declared out for the rest of the NBA season. Rubio's knee buckled last night while he was helping out on defense with a little more than a minute left to play in their 105-102 home loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. The diagnosis is that Rubio suffered a torn ACL.
This injury puts a damper on this season for the Timberwolves (21-20). This season is the first season since the '04-05 season that Minnesota has been over .500 this late into the season. The reason why they were competing for a playoff spot was because of Rubio being the catalyst. He was averaging 10.6 points, 8.2 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game.
Not only will he miss the rest of this season, he will more than likely miss the 2012 Summer Olympics in London as well. Spain was favored to make it to the Gold Medal Game against the USA. Now, Spain will have a tough time to even make it into the quarterfinals this summer.
