The leader of Lord's Resistance Army,, is becoming an Internet sensation…for being a monster.
The advocacy group Invisible Children has put up a 30-minute video to raise awareness about the guerrilla group leader and the atrocities carried out by Kony's Lord's Resistance Army. The video went viral on YouTube and racked up over 60 million views since being posted last Monday (click here to watch the video).
The Lord’s Resistance Army, formed in 1986 in the Acholi region of Northern Uganda, is a militant group following conflicting fusion of Christian extreme religious ideology. Joseph Kony insists that he and the Lord's Resistance Army are fighting for the Ten Commandments and that holy spirits were sent to convey the mission directly to him. He also believes in the literal protection provided by the symbol of the cross and that the cross drawn in oil on the chest will protect from bullets.
The majority of Kony's Lord's Resistance Army soldiers are children and young adults. Some experts estimate that, since 1986, over 100,000 children were forced to join the militia.
Presently, Kony's Lord's Resistance Army operates in Congo, the Central African Republic and South Sudan, and has only about 250 fighters. Still, the militia abducts children to use them as soldiers or sex slaves. Children are often forced to kill their own parents or each other as means of learning how to fight and survive in the jungle.
Since 1986, Kony and his child army have forced the internal displacement of over 2 million people. They are known for appalling atrocities committed against civilians, which include murder, mutilations, rape, and even cannibalism.
In 2005, Joseph Kony was indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, the Netherlands. Kony is being hunted by 100 U.S. Special Forces advisers and local troops in four Central African countries, but, thus far, he avoided capture.
It’s been also difficult to raise public awareness about Joseph Kony and his crimes. As International Criminal Court Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo says: "Kony is difficult, he is not killing people in Paris or in New York. Kony is killing people in Central African Republic, no one cares about him.’
Now, the advocacy group Invisible Children is trying to increase awareness about the unspeakable crimes committed by Kony and his army.
Invisible Children want to introduce Joseph Kony to us.
Millions already met him through the video.
More are about to.
Let’s hope Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army will be stopped.
