US, Thai soldiers train in joint military exercise Feb 15 12.
The US and Thai militaries once again partnered up Wednesday (February 15) to practice live fire exercises in Lopburi Province, roughly 177 kilometers (110 miles) north of Bangkok. The drills are part of "Cobra Gold," a US partnership with Southeast Asian countries. Wednesday's Combined Arms Live Fire Exercise (CALFEX) involved 500 units from both the Thai and US marine forces. Four 227-kilo (500-pound) bombs were dropped by two Thai fighter jets while soldiers shot artillery guns. This is the second exercise in a row that involved only US and Thai soldiers. On Tuesday (February 14), the two sides conducted a chemical warfare drill. "You know, this is the 31st year that we've done Cobra Gold so it's never been focused on any particular country and we will continue to exercise together, as we did today. This was the high end of the military operations where we synchronize all our activities likewise we've been synchronising all our activities from across the country in low-end spectrum to the staff exercises as well," said General Kenneth Glueck, Jr. of the US marines.
