March 7, 2012: This commercial for the Dollar Shave Club should be filed under "Y didn't I" think of that.
This (the title not this article) is an actual commercial for an actual company. Dollar Shave Club is a Santa Monica, California based start-up company and the brain-child of Michael Dubin (CEO) and Mark Levine. The idea is: people join a club which sends them a supply of razors for as low as a dollar a month. The member has to pay for shipping and there are more expensive blades available. Initial reviews of the product have all been very favorable. Based on initial projections, the company claims its members can save up to $300.00 a month.
Dollar Shave Club launched out of private beta testing on Tuesday, March 6. It received nearly $1 million in seed funding from Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers and Forerunner Ventures. Other contributors include Andreessen Horowitz, Shasta Ventures, Felicis Ventures and Science Inc. The blades, high quality stainless steel, are made by a private-label manufacturer in Korea. Dollar Shave Club, which started in April 2011, plans to release more products this year, including shaving cream and after-shave moisturizer.
To introduce its new idea to the general public, Michael Dubin and Dollar Shave Club released its very funny commercial on March 5. On YouTube the video went viral fast. It was so funny and popular that product review videos were quickly released, because the commercial was initially thought to be joke.
So can a company make money by selling you razor blades for a dollar a month? While we wait to see, enjoy commercial Here.
