The election results of the 5 states , including the most populous state of

Uttar Pradesh and Punjab gave a rude shock to the both , the ruling

Congress party and the main Opposition party , the BJP .

In Uttar Pradesh , the Samajwadi Party , headed by Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav

gave a big scare to all the parties , winning a clear majority on its own for the

first time winning 224 of the 403 Assembly seats . The Bahujan Samaj

Party of Ms. Mayawati which was ruling the state could get only 80 of

the 403 seats . The BJP which has ruled the state a number of times could

only manage to win 47 seats while the congress party and its ally , Ajit

Singh!s Rashtriya Lok Dal ( RLD ) could only win 38 seats getting only

6.9 % of the votes where as the Samajwadi Party got a whopping 55.6 %

of the votes , the BSP and BJP got only 19.9 % and 11.7 % valid votes .

The hi tech campaign of the Congress Party , by its General Secretary

and a future Prime Ministerial candidate , Rahul Gandhi proved a flop

show as the election results demonstrated . The congress party performed

miserably even in the belts nourished by the Nehru - Gandhi family

including Amethi and Rae Bareilly . The party could only win 2 out of

the 10 seats at stake . On the other hand Mr. Akhilesh Yadav , the

President of the Samajwadi party and the son of the former Chief Minister

and Defence Minister , Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav , led a very impressive

compaign to conquer the most important and populous state of the

country . He desreves all the credit for this historic win .

The Bahujan Samaj Party led by Ms. Mayawati could not stop the stop

the march of the Samajwadi party and could win only 80 of the 403 seats .

But she became the first Chief Minister to complete a 5 year term .

The BJP , which is the main opposition party in the Parliament performed

so miserably that it lost its prestigious Ayodhya seat to the Samajwadi

party by over 5 thousand votes . The party had not lost this seat since

1991 .

In Punjab , the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal led by the Chief Minister ,

Mr. Prakash Singh Badal and its ally , the BJP created history by

retaining majority in the state assembly . The coalition led by their

star campaigner , Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal , the Deputy Chief Minister of

the state and son of the Chief Minister captured 68 of the 117 seats

while the main opposition in the assembly , the congress party could win

only 46 seats . This SAD secured more than 52 % of the valid votes while

the congress party could only get only about 39 % of the votes . This only

goes to show that the government worked well for the welfare of the people

and for the first time in the history of Punjab , returned to power .

The state of Uttarakhand which was once a part of Uttar Pradesh gave

a very tight verdict for both the ruling BJP and the opposition party , the

Congress . The Congress Party won 32 of the 70 seats while the BJP got

only 31 seats . The most miserable happening for the ruling BJP , was

that the Chief Minister , Mr. Khanduri who was projected as Mr. Clean by

the BJP lost from the Kotdwar Constituency .

The Congress party got 45.7 % of the valid votes while the BJP secured

44.3 % of the valid votes . The 3 BSP legislatures and the 4 independents

will play a very important role in the formation of the next government .

The ruling Congress Party may draw some satisfaction from the results

of the Manipur Assembly , where the party was able to wrest power for

the third consecutive time . The congress party won 42 of the 60 seats ,

securing 70 % of the valid votes and is comfortably placed to form

its goverment .

Time for BJP to draw some satisfaction as it defeated the ruling Congress

Party in the elections to the Goa Assembly . The BJP and its allies captured

24 of the 40 seats , securing 60 % of the valid votes while the Congress

Party could win only 9 seats . The BJP will comfortably form its government

in the state .

These election results have jolted both the national parties , the Conress

Party and the BJP as both these parties performed miserably . The UPA

government led by Dr. Manmohan Singh will face a very tough time ahead .

Regional parties will now dominate the Indian political scenerio making

both the national parties to bow before their wishes . Regional leaders

like Mamta Bannerjee , Nitish Kumar , Mr. Modi . Ms. Jayalalitha ,

Mr. Naveen Patnaik , Mr. Sharad Psawar and Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav

are likely to increase their domination of the Indian political scene in

the times to come . As the national parties become weaker , the regional

parties will dominate .

These election results will also have a serious effect on the Presidential

Elections , slated for July . It will be very difficult for the ruling Congress

Party to get its candidate elected as the next President of the country

and to occupy the prestigious Rashtrapati Bhawan . The co operation

between the regional parties is likely to increase in the times to come ,

and will lead to a weak central government which will have to bow to

the pressure of the regional parties . This will definitely help the Federal\

structure of India .
