Kliwon, the 30-year old male giraffe in the Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia was the last giraffe in the zoo and had been leading a lonely life in its pen for the last 13-years.
Surabaya Zoo is the largest in the country. More than 500 animals have died there between 2010 and 2011.
The zoo was criticized in 2010 when hundreds of the deaths that were reported were of diseases that could have been cured if it had been detected in time and attended to.
These were diseases like pneumonia, diarrhea and malnutrition.
