US President Barack Obama has said in clear terms that a military offensive can be launched against Iran if all diplomatic and peaceful efforts fail to convince the country to stop its controversial nuclear program. For the first time, the president sounded harsh on the issue and said the US is in sync with Israel on the issue. He, however, advised Israel to refrain from launching attack on nuclear facilities of Iran because it can distract the attention of the world community towards other important issues.
Israeli Prime Ministeris due to arrive in US on Monday, when he would have a detailed meeting with President Barack Obama. Some US officials who are privy to the developments said that both the leaders would contemplate on different options of containing nuclear weapons program of Iran besides other issues of mutual interests. Netanyahu has expressed his concerns over nuclear program of Iran for a number of times and even wants to destroy the nuclear program of the country like Israel did in Syria and Iraq.
President Obama is, however, reluctant to carry out military attacks on Iran because he believes the strikes could only delay development of the nuclear weapons. He believes that all out efforts should be made to isolate the country from rest of the world. The US and European Union have slapped economic sanctions on Iran besides embargo on crude oil import. Mr. Obama expressed these views in a 45-minute interview with The Atlantic magazine.
On the other hand, Iran totally appears defiant to the international pressure and concern. The country is hell bent to continue with its nuclear program, claiming the program is for civilian purposes. Iranian officials say their nuclear program is for medical research and fulfill energy needs of the country and deny development of nuclear weapons. They also question unannounced nuclear program of Israel that evades US and other European countries' attention.
At a time when the US is planning to withdraw its troops from volatile Afghanistan it would be perilous to attack Iran. The US may destroy nuclear facilities of Iran by aerial attacks, but is the country also ready for possible repercussions? Iranian officials have said many times to attack Israel and wipe it out from the map of the earth if it is attacked by US or Israel. Iran is also improving its relations with its neighboring countries including Afghanistan and Pakistan. Russia, China and some Latin American countries are already supporting Iran against the US and Israel.
President Obama should take all details into consideration before resorting to attack Iran. Some analysts also believe that attacking Iran can trigger Third World War, putting safety of the whole world at risk. Russia, China, Pakistan and other Middle Eastern countries must be taken into confidence prior to launching an attack on Iran.
