Remembering Davy Jones

Feb. 29, 2012

Davy Jones, the diminutive lead singer of the 1960s made-for-TV group The Monkees, died in his sleep Wednesday after suffering a massive heart attack at his Florida home. He was 66.

Jones and his fellow Monkees Michael Nesmith, Mickey Dolenz and Peter Tork thrilled pre-teens and teenyboppers with their high-energy Saturday morning television show, playing themselves in a half-hour show about their lives in a rock band that ran on NBC from 1966 to 1968. Although the group disbanded in 1971 before reuniting for a tour in the late 1980s, the Monkees have sold more than 50 million records over the last 40-some years.

Jones, who was cast as the “ladies’ man” of the group despite his tiny size (5-foot-3), thrived in the role as the tambourine-shaking lead vocalist.

A former jockey when he was picked for the TV series, Jones also appeared as “The Artful Dodger” in a London stage production of “Oliver!” prior to joining the Monkees. One of Punditty’s favorite Davy Jones moments was his cameo appearance on “The Brady Bunch” in the early 1970s.

Jones was married three times and is survived by four daughters from his first two marriages.
