While some stars choose to hide from the spotlight after a split, singer Seal has openly talked about the failure of his marriage to supermodel Heidi Klum. Now, the 49-year-old is defending his decision to publically discuss the matter.
In an interview on the radio show “Fifi and Jules”, Seal explained the reason behind candidly talking about his split with Heidi Klum, 38. "When you publicize your marriage as much as our marriage was publicized, when you renew wedding vows, when you do all those things, what you are saying to people is ... you're giving people a picture of an ideal relationship that people aspire to," the singer said on radio show in Australia, where he's currently performing his "Soul 2" tour.
The singer went on to say that he wanted the public to have an open view of the couple’s life and to know why his 8-year long marriage to Heidi Klum hit the rocks because he and his wife both had always been open about their personal life.
"When it goes south, you can't all of a sudden take the philosophy of a monk and decide to go for a vow of silence. It doesn’t really work like that," Seal said. "I respect my wife's decision not to talk about that, but I felt that people at least deserved some kind of explanation why the picture of the ideal wasn't what they thought it was."
Seal said that he had always tried to keep his family his first priority no matter what the circumstances and would continue to do so. "I've tried my very best to protect the general welfare of my family, my wife included," he added.
The singer had previously made appearances on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “Piers Morgan Tonight” and talked about his breakup with Heidi Klum. On "Ellen", he also explained why he was still wearing his wedding ring.
"It's just pretty much a token of how I feel about this woman," he told host Ellen DeGeneres in the interview. "We have eight years, eight wonderful years together. Just because we have decided to separate doesn't necessarily mean that you take off your ring and you're no longer connected to that person. We will be connected in many ways 'til the rest of our lives."
"Will we wear the rings for the rest of our lives? Who knows?" he continued. "But right now it feels really comfortable on my hand, so I have no intention of taking it off anytime soon."
Seal and Heidi Klum are parents to three biological children, Henry, 6, Johan, 5, and Lou, 2, plus Klum's 7-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, Leni, whom Seal adopted in 2009.
