An explosion caused by a fire in a Brazilian naval base in Antarctica leaving a balance of a soldier injured and two missing on Saturday, according to military reports.
The Brazilian Navy said the fire started where the power generators based Comandante Ferraz , a research station located in the Bay of Admiralty , on King George Island, near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.
The only injured, which is in stable condition, was immediately attended a Polish base and then transferred to the Chilean Eduardo Frei.
Two Argentine ships and two Poles were in the vicinity of the damaged site and provided assistance through three Chilean helicopters.
Chilean Defense Minister, Andres Allamand , said the information handled is that the Ferraz base was destroyed in its entirety . The Chilean Air Force moved to Punta Arenas to 42 Brazilian citizens and two Spanish.
He confirmed that two people remain missing, "presumed dead" . He said "when conditions exist" for a patrol is to "ascertain the situation and eventually recover the victims."
