If you are disabled and if you live in Bolivia, then you are out of luck. The Bolivian government has a horrible system set up to help the disabled in comparison to other countries. A disabled person only receives about $120 a month. With Bolivia being a mountainous country, most buildings are not accessible by wheelchairs. Since the disabled cannot gain access to these buildings, they are not able to obtain viable employment to supplement their income.
As a result, the disabled are left to wallow in squalor. However, they are proving that they are no longer going to meander in the mire. They decided to protest for better subsidies. A group of protesters, including adults, children, and those with disabilities, travelled over 900 miles to La Paz, the capitol of Bolivia. The trek took one hundred days.
Once the protesters made it to La Paz, they clashed with police. Some of the protesters were attempting to hit police with crutches and with wheels taken off of their wheelchairs. The police were ready because they were in full riot gear. The police responded by pepper spraying the disabled. In the end, the police blocked the protesters from making their voices be heard in the presidential square.
