In only a year the 62-year-old Dominique Strauss-Kahn went all the way from the IMF chief with an aspiration to French presidency to suspect in hotel prostitution ring. French police investigating a suspected prostitution ring in France and Belgium invited Strauss-Kahn to testify as a witness in the case but when the former IMF chief came to the police station in Lille he was immediately taken into custody for interrogation.
Reportedly, prosecutors said he is to be questioned on suspicion of pimping and misuse of company funds and will be held in custody until ‘Wednesday at least’ before bail can be considered, a source close to the case told Daily Mail.
French investigators have interviewed prostitutes in Lille who said they had paid sex with Strauss-Kahn at luxury hotels in Paris and Washington, where he lived until May 2011 when he resigned his position at the IMF.
Earlier, he admitted attending orgies all over the world but denied being aware he was having sex with paid prostitutes. Apparently, the main argument of his defense is that ‘naked women all look the same’.
"He could easily not have known, because as you can imagine, at these kinds of parties you're not always dressed, and I challenge you to distinguish a naked prostitute from any other naked woman” Strauss-Kahn’s lawyer Henri Leclerc told French television in December.
In France, paying a prostitute is not illegal but profiting from prostitution, or pimping, is.
Last year in May, Strauss-Kahn has been accused of raping Nafissatou Diallo, a 32-year-old maid in a New York hotel. Following the charges he resigned as the chief of the IMF but the case was later dropped.
