Even before the tears have dried from the eyes of the 350-odd families of the Honduras prison fire, another 44 lives have been lost in prison violence and riots in the New Mexico prison of Monterrey.
Was this new spate of violence an engineered one to hide a prison break?
This vilence is reported from the Monterrey prison located 140 miles from the border with Texas - the incident happened on Sunday and the victims were beaten, stoned and stabbed to death.
It is presumably a result of inter gang rivalry between the Zeta drug gang and the Mexico drug cartels and efforts to contain the ongoing feud appears to be having no effect on the gangs.
However, the authorities are tightlipped about whether the fight was really between these two gangs – they are awaiting the identification of the dead bodies to arrive at any firm decision.
It is common knowledge that prisons in Mexico are overcrowded and corruption is rampant as also mass escapes. And – the situation aggravates when criminals held on drug related charges are kept in close proximity of other ordinary criminals.
