Mercury Seven Astronauts

It was on 20th February 1962 that astronaut John Glenn circled the Earth thrice in the Friendship-7 capsule – that heralded the entry of the USA into the space race.

The 90-year old astronaut along with fellow astronaut 86-year old Scott Carpenter reminisced with the people of NASA on their experiences as they addressed the employees of the Kennedy Space Center.

John Glenn was followed by Scott Carpenter who also went into Space a couple of months later - aboard the Aurora 7 on May 24, 1962.

Of course, Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom had flown into Space in 1961 before Glenn and Carpenter but those were sub-orbital missions.

John Glenn is now a US senator and has been so for the past 24-years but, in 1998, he went into orbit again in the Space shuttle Discovery at the age of 77-years – this made him the oldest Spaceman in the world.
