Shirley Bunn, 63, two time winner of “Teacher of the Year” was suspended for telling Hispanic student to “Go back to Mexico.”

Bunn made the comment on Sept. 30 while distributing Title 1 forms to her eighth-grade students at Barnett Junior High School. Dallas-Fort Worth's Fox 4 reports that a disruptive student requested a Spanish-language version of the form, saying, "I'm Mexican. I'm Mexican," according to Huffington Post.

According to public record, Bunn attempted to tell the student that he could retrieve forms translated into Spanish from the main office, but the student continued to repeat, "I'm Mexican."

Bunn quickly responded, "[Then] go back to Mexico."

The school board acted back in September to suspend, but late last Wednesday , the examiner, Jess Rickman III, recommended that the school board allow Bunn to return to her post. In his 23-page opinion, Rickman determined that the district did not provide sufficient grounds for termination.

"Under the circumstances when taken in the context of the moment and the lack of intent for 'Go back to Mexico' to be a racially or nationality-based pejorative remark, I find it was not a remark of an egregious nature," Rickman said, Fox 4 reports.

Since Rickman's opinion is just a recommendation, the school board could still reject it and permanently terminate Bunn, who has taught at Barnett since 1999.

"It was almost instantaneous. I thought, 'God, I don't believe that came out of my mouth,'" Bunn told The Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

"It was a very, very hard week, the end of six weeks. It was late in the day. It was a Friday. We were on the third day of the first curriculum assessment and I knew it wasn't going well. It was just an extremely bad day," Bunn said.

The school board will make a decision next month on whether to terminate Bunn.

It’s possible that negative termination might adversely affect Bunn’s retirement status, but no information about Dallas Fort Worth’s protocols for a situation like this were available.

What do you think? A momentary lapse of etiquette or does this harbor a more serious undercurrent of racism?

ohh, sorry to hear about lady Shirley Bunn. heavy teaching profession.I'm not racist but I think I did the same. after such a repetition of "I'm Mexican",what does it mean at all? This student wanted to do for her mental endurance test? or what? no respect, and such disregard for even the lady because of her age?
I am surprised that such a student went to high school. This behavior is probably limited in intelligence, and should appeal to a special school for mentally-limited.

Thanks for the report Dava. They sometimes what comes out o our mouth in anger and frustration is really our true thoughts lurking subconsciously. Is that what happened with this teacher? who knows but it certainly sounded bias and as someone helping to shape young minds, she should have known better.

thank you amagda and Veronica for reading and commenting.

I have to agree Veronica. Just the statement "go back to Mexico" implies a negative attitude that marginalizes an individual. Other students hearing this are bound to be influenced by it, not to mention the hurt to the student it was directed toward.

How can this HURT the student toward which it was directed? If he is Mexican, then why SHOULDN'T he go to HIS country and receive the services of HIS government instead of leaching off of American tax payers? If he isn't Mexican, then his statements are disruptive and hurting THE OTHER STUDENTS in the class! Why are you not concerned with THEIR wellbeing? You are just as racist as you accuse her of being!

Good grief, you liberals are destroying the country! You drive the election of people like Obama, Pelosi, Reid, et al, who wants to "fundamentally transform" our nation and society....just like the former Soviet Union wanted to...just like China, Iran, and radical islam want to.....SHAME on you!!!!!! They are ENEMIES of your society and country. Open your eyes!

She must have been teaching I think for last 30 years. She had been awarded the best teacher of the year twice in her career.Thousand of students regardless what nationality they had taught by her.One student only one got a remark you think depict the racism. What in her mind, what she was saying you can't ruin her life.I think it is her whole life not only career. She is human .Don't this to her.

Baloney I am a native of another Central American nation and I am told to obey laws in America bottom line. The student may have tricked her into insulting him.

Children today have no home training or respect. It's ashame that people are so wrapped up in being politically correct that they cannot see the bigger picture. Live in America learn English! It's our native language. They do not teach English as a first language in Mexican schools. Why would Spanish be taught as a primary language in an American PUBLIC SCHOOL?? The child should have been sent to the office and reprimanded for being an ungrateful SMART A$% and disruptive to class. Then his parents should send him to "Mexico" to stay with a less fortunate family memer or friend for the summer, it would do wonders for his "perspective." Ms. Bunn, you can teach my children anytime.

I feel sorry for this teacher. The student mother language is Spanish but the school the boy is in an American public school where the official teaching/learning is English. If the boy wants to sticks to his native language, then he should attend a school with Spanish as learning language. Or he should go to special class to learn English to better understand the subjects in his class. This is nothing to do with racism. It is important for any kid to establish his/her mother language as learning OS or L1 language. It is interesting to learn that EU's official languages are those of all participating countries to EU; not English, German, French, Spanish and so forth, but all those languages including Polish, Lithuanian and etc. etc.

Dava Castillo, probably, that was the best statement madam could say at that moment. Good, she did not bad mouth the president of Mexico for allowing his people like the student to go to United States of America. Rate you up.
