One lady, who has been there for late Whitney Houston throughout the ups and downs of her turbulent life, has been her godmother-cum-loyal fan Aretha Franklin.
The Queen of Soul has now opened up about her immense love for Whitney Houston and how she had always been a morale booster for her amid her struggles.
"We were all aware of her challenges," discloses the 69-year-old soul songstress to PEOPLE reflecting on Whitney’s distressed life and her attempts at a comeback. Franklin speaking exclusively in the new issue of People, then went on to declare heartwarmingly that she was “always rooting” for Whitney.
The soul songstress was optimistic that Whitney was slowly coming to grips with her problems. She recalls how delighted she was with Whitney’s glorious comeback to the silver screen and says "Seeing previews for the new Sparkle movie I thought, boy she looks good, healthy, fresh and has that twinkle in her eyes!" What probably the “Pink Cadillac” songstress may have not known then was it was the last big glow, before the celebrated candle flame went off.
Looking back; Franklin remembers Whitney’s European tour and says that though the Queen of Pop was exciting but not in a position to sing. And that must have been real “disheartening," she adds. Franklin, meanwhile as a true die-hard fan has even shared Houston memories on her Facebook and Twitter.
Despite enduring several hardships, Franklin says she will always remember the pop icon as some one who possessed a champion’s heart. She says that Whitney “stood night after night and endured unappreciative audiences with the heart of a champion."
Meanwhile the Queen of Soul in another interview tells TODAY's Al Roker that her first reaction on hearing of the death of her goddaughter Whitney Houston was to instantly jump off her bed. After watching George Clooney in 'The Descendants,' she says “I flipped back to the regular TV and maybe two minutes after I did it came across the screen ………..I just jumped up off the side of the bed."
Indeed what an inglorious end to an illustrious career. A powerfully mesmerizing voice which held millions in sway for decades, has been silenced forever.
