Assad calls referendum on new constitution for Syria

Assad Running out of Friends, but China, Russia Still Among Allies

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad called for a referendum on February 26 next on drafting a new constitution, according to Syrian state television quoted by international news agencies.

It is estimated that the new bill would set aside the clause according to which the ruling Baath Party is the "leader of the nation and society."

Meanwhile, opposition activists report that the army began an offensive in the city of Hama with heavy shelling to remove armed resistance against the government.
