At least 200 inmates were killed in a Honduras prison fire

A devastating fire in a prison in the town of Comayagua in Honduras is believed to have taken the lives of at least 272 inmates out of some 800 inmates – most of the bodies have been burnt beyond recognition while many others have suffocated to death.

The death toll could be higher because search operations are still continuing.

The fire started at night and the source of the fire is not known as yet - however, fire as a result of riot in the premises has been ruled out. Most probably it might have been from an electrical short circuit.

The prison is located 140 Km north of Tegucigalpa.
