Sri lankan state terror in the form of the dreaded and infamous “white van squad” struck again in Colombo on Saturday February 11th 2012 when a Tamil businessman was abducted near his residence here in Wellawatte, Colombo in the presence of his wife and daughter.
According to Sri Lanka police, Ramasamay Prabhakaran, 42, was bundled into a white van by seven men armed with assault rifles and hand guns before it sped towards Dehiwala.
The victim, who is the owner of “Panama Traders”, an electronics store cum showroom within the Majestic City Complex in Bambalapitiya, was seized in broad daylight by armed goons at about 3.30 pm shortly after the family had returned from Athurugiriya,Ratmalana.
“The armed men were hiding in our compound, surrounded by a brick wall. They grabbed my husband by the neck and dragged him towards the vehicle. He was screaming for help as they sped away,” his wife Shiromi told the media.
She later made a complaint to the Wellawatte police. “The police told me that the registration number of the white van was a fake,” she said.
According to the colombo media the businessman had been in custody since May 2009 as a suspected LTTE member and detained for 28 months but later he was released on September 16, 2011 due to lack of evidence and all charges against him were dropped.
Subsequently, the businessman had filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) case in the Supreme Court where senior police officers attached to the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) were cited as respondents but he was abducted two days prior to the fundamental rights case filed by him was to be taken up.
As per the latest reports the abductors seem to have asked for a ransom amount of 100 million Sri Lanka Rupees from the wife of the victim to free him.
Interestingly enough the businessman had demanded 90 million in damages for violating his Fundamental Rights from his respondents and this seemingly flawless abduction is believed to have been caried with the approval of upper echelons of the Defence establishment.
Oh Sri Lanka ! You are in a mess! You are no more the "pearl of the indian ocean" but you are now a "pain of the indian ocean" because of the mindless acts of the Sri Lankan politicians and their goons.
