It’s Valentine’s month and last weekend marked the triumph of romantic films. The Vow topped the box office last weekend besting the new film of Denzel Washington and a 3D sequel with the Rock.

Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams brought in a lot of cash from women who wanted a romantic night at the movies. The Vow took in $ 41.7 million with only a $ 30 million budget. Not bad for Sony which already has a guaranteed hit. The film may have gotten the top spot but it also got mixed reviews. Still, it is a romance film and it is sure to rake in more cash especially in the international screens.

Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds’ latest action film Safe House also did great at number two earning $ 39.3 million. It is one of Denzel Washington’s highest openings earning only less than American Gangster ($ 43.5 Million) back in 2007. At three is the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, Journey 2: The Lost Island. The Rock, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Michael Caine and Luis Guzman brought in $ 27.5 million. It earned higher than the first film which earned $ 21 million at its opening day.

In fourth place is the 3D re-release of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. It got $ 23 million but still, the 3D wasn’t enough to bring Star Wars fans to change their minds about the film’s flaws. Chronicle lost about 44% of its audience but still managed to rake in $ 12.3 million. It now has a domestic gross of $ 40 million with a budget of $ 12 million. Not bad for a “found footage” film. Harry Potter’s The Woman in Black lost half of its audience but still raked in $ 10.3 million making its total gross to $ 35.4 million.

Next week, we get to see the opening of the spy vs. spy film This Means War with Chris Pine, Tom Hardy and Reese Witherspoon. Also next week the anime film The Secret World of Arrietty and Nicolas Cage rides again the flamed skull in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Below is the complete box office list:
