The Sofitel Hotel and Pierre Hotels of New York have taken a decision to issue ‘panic buttons’ or ‘personal alarms’ to all the housekeepers of their hotels. The Manhattan hotel administration does not want a repeat of the Dominique Strauss-Kahn case when DSK, the IMF Chief, was reported to have made sexual advances towards one of the housekeepers in the hotel where he had been staying.
These safety devices are a result of deliberations of that May-2011 incident and have been approved by the Hotel Association of New York. It is suggested that the female employees carry these with them when they enter an occupied guest room.
The motto clearly is – better be safe than sorry.
