Chinese mothers give birth in Hong Kong to reap benefits

A rally in Hong Kong today against mainland Chinese pregnant mothers using local hospital services

The newest trend is fast catching up – Chinese mothers or ‘birth-tourists’ from the mainland are making a beeline for Hong Kong to give birth to their babies on its soil. They take advantage of the law of Hong Kong namely – any person born on its soil automatically gets its citizenship and free education up to 12-years of age.

The Chinese mothers also circumvent the Chinese law of ‘one-child norm’ which forbids having more than one child.

Moreover, the hospital facilities are better in Hong Kong and, and even though the administration of HK is trying to restrict the total number of such births to around 3400 per year (it was 32,000 plus in 2010), they are unable to contain the problem. Chinese mothers keep turning up in the final stages of pregnancy and cannot be refused admission – there are touts who arrange for such late arrivals from China mainland!!
