Ten militants were killed in the Waziristan region of Pakistan on Wednesday by a U.S. drone attack. It’s the fifth time this year that the United States has used missile firing drones to take out militants in Pakistan. The attacked happened near thePakistan/Afghanistan border according to security officials.
Two missiles were fired at a house that was a suspected militant hideout. The house was located in Thapi, which is about ten miles from Miranshah. The building was completely demolished by the missiles, and according toPakistani security officials, ten militants were killed.
One villager who visited the house after the attack said that almost all of the ten people were burned beyond recognition. He also said that there were dozens ofmilitant fighters that arrived after the attack and they removed nine bodies from the home.
North Waziristan is home to many militant groups, including al Qaeda, theAfghan Taliban, and the Haqqani network. The latter has aligned itself with the Taliban and the United States says that they are one of the most lethal groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This region of Pakistan is preferred by the militant groups because of the ease with which the groups can move across the border and into Afghanistan.
A Pashtun elder said that the militants are avoiding gathering in large numbers. They try to keep their meetings to groups of three or four people in order to keep their losses to a minimum in case of a drone attack. For the last few days, though, it’s been very cold. There haven’t been any drones seen in the area for quite some time. The militants moved into the house and now have suffered heavy losses.
Pakistan is not happy with the United States for conducting drone attacks in their country. Many of the politicians in the country believe that it is a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty. However, the Pakistangovernment continues to support the drone program since President Obama came into office – although they have been very quiet in that support.
