Obama drives Jews and Catholics to the Right

For years, American Jews have been very solidly behind the Democratic party, but that appears to be changing. President Obama's cool attitude and indecisive policy towards Israel and her security, may very well be to blame. As recently as 2008, 72 percent of Jewish voters identified themseives as Democrats, or stated they leaned towards Democrats at election time. This gave Democrats a 52 percentage point advantage.

The results of a new poll from Pew Research Center reveals that Jewish support for Democrats has declined to 65 percent, while their backing for the GOP has risen 9 points, to 29 percent, leaving a “significantly smaller 36-point margin".

The Center reports, “Jewish voters, who have traditionally been and remain one of the strongest Democratic constituencies, have moved noticeably in the Republican direction".

In his statement directed at the Pew poll, Republican Jewish Coalition Executive Director Matt Brooks said: "This notable analysis from the unimpeachable professionals at the Pew Research Center shows a significant shift in Jewish political identification — a shift toward Republicans and away from Democrats. This was not the softer move of more Jewish respondents saying that they 'lean' Republican, but a solid shift in Jewish self-identification as Republicans."

Obama has also taken a direct shot at the Vatican, and Catholics in the United States by attempting to force Catholic hospitals to provide abortion, and contraceptive services, in direct violation of Catholic canonical law.

This creates another serious problem for the Obama administration. Because of the Republican opposition to Obamacare, Catholics also appear to be moving farther to the right:

"For the first time in recent memory, the number of Catholic Republicans in the House of Representatives, 61, nearly equals the number of Democratic members at 64 or 65. That marks a dramatic shift from two years ago, when there were 98 Catholic Democrats and 38 Republicans. Catholic membership in the Senate remains relatively stable" (National Catholic Register, Dec. 19, 2010).

Because of their refusal to act against illegal immigration in the state of Arizona and elsewhere and their direct assault on the rights of Arizona and her citizens to act on their own behalf, as well as the Department of Justice's refusal to enforce any formal vetting of the citizenship of voters, or other polling station irregularities, the Obama administration has been accused of pandering to illegals, in hopes of gaining votes in the November elections. From this vantage point, that certainly appears to be the case.

In what may eventually turn out to be an extremely inconvenient truth, most of the illegals entering via our southern borders are, in fact, Catholic, and are, it would seem, likely to follow the dictates of their pope and religion.

Just stating the facts as I read them. Obama has been alienating Jews and Catholics almost from the beginning of his administration.

Obama is underestimating the faith of the citizenship in the US. We are not a Godless country and our faith matters. As it becomes more and more apparent the man uses faith as a weapon (did he really use Jesus to push for higher taxes, when less than 3 months ago refused to say CHRISTmas) he will lose more and more of the Christian vote.

His rule by executive order today may assist with the Jewish vote today, but Israel has no love for this President and this President only disdain for Israel. Obama can't hide behind a sheer curtain for long.

As the Middle East erupts, Syria and Iran will pull support from Egypt to attack Israel who may attack first - probably will attack first. America's election in 2012 will decide undoubtedly which side America will be on.

Thanks for your comments Maryann... as usual, you're spot on the money. Sometimes a politician can be to slick for his own good; Obama certainly appears to be perched on that parapet...

It's not just the Magisterium that is upset with Obama on the birth control issue. Even lapsed Catholics don't like being told that Catholic hospitals must provide birth control. I believe it will come into play in 2012 and that the president will not win as many Catholic voters as he did in 2012. But with the certainty of facing a weak GOP candidate in November, be it Romney or Gingrich, Obama should be able to survive the defections.

But if Paul wins the GOP nomination, the whole playing field will require reassessing. And let's not forget that pro-choice candidate Gary Johnson will be in the mix. He will likely have the most popular position of all three major candidates in remaining emphatically pro-choice while also saying the government should not be trying to force Catholic hospitals to perform abortions or contraceptives.

Thanks for the comments; interesting analysis. Personally, I think that even a weak candidate knocks Obama off the top, just as Obama did with George W Bush, mainly because voters are, many times, just as motivated to vote against something as they are to vote for something.

Hardy,

Remember it was John Kerry, not Obama, who ran against W. Bush. It was an open presidency in 2008, so no candidate was running with the advantage (or burden?) of incumbency.

LOL... my bad... my mind was clearly elsewhere; of course you're right. I meant to say McCain... officially Obama ran against McCain, but in reality, he ran against the policies of and resentment to, GW... those votes won't be available this time around...

Hardy,

I am not questioning your premise as it's well presented, but I do believe there is a philosophical gulf between clergy and parishioners. Catholic doctrine opposes birth control and abortion, but surveys show many Catholics use contraceptives upwards to 90% of Catholic women. If contraception is this important to Catholic women, why would they vote to have it denied?
Reply By Write4Life Maryann Scarangello | 4 months ago
The pill or other contraceptives are but a part of this whole mess. It is the forcing of religious organizations to turn their backs on issues that are in direct opposition to their religious beliefs that has people upset. It's against the Constitution and a restriction on the free exercise of religion.

Whether individuals in the parish believe in birth control may be one thing... abortion - partial birth abortions, sterilization etc.... goes much further and I would bet the divide much less than simple pills.

I'm curious how that 90% (a statistic on the use of contraception) stacks up to Catholics that support abortion .... and even more deeply driven - what about partial birth abortions in states where it is legal? Will a Catholic hospital be forced to perform one?

Under Obama's mandate - Yes.

Heya Maryann... again, you're spot on the money: according to the report below, almost 2/3 of Catholics oppose abortion except to save the life of the mother, or in the case of rape or incest...

Thanks for your comments Dava; you may be correct; it'll depend on how strongly the Vatican emphasizes it's position. Marginal movement to the right would still be significant...

An independent survey of Catholics was done and this is the essence of their findings.
These voters, 47% of whom attend Catholic mass at least once a month, strongly support the creation of a government health insurance option for those who do not already have insurance. Catholic voters also want broad coverage—under either private insurance or government insurance—for a number of controversial procedures, including abortion.

Unlike the leadership of the Catholic Church, most Catholic voters firmly disagree with the arguments being made by some U.S. Catholic Bishops that health care reform must be blocked entirely if abortion coverage is included as part of reform.

Just to be clear, abortion is a very difficult decision and it's not made lightly. I worked in an abortion clinic part time for eight years, and I have seen what it does to women. It's the procedure of last resort for most women, and they should be allowed to chose.
Reply By firesisle Hardy Wright | 4 months ago
As a firm supporter of the Constitution, as much as I deplore the practice of abortion, I absolutely support a woman's right to choose for herself.

Don't know if you checked my link above, but it indicates that about 60% of Catholics oppose abortion except to save the life of the mother or in cases of rape or incest. Also, while abortion is a strong woman's issue, there are also Catholic men who vote...

...and it just gets uglier and uglier.

Is religious discrimination against beliefs (Jewish and Christian) on American soil tolerated? Absolutely.

I guess the Catholic Church should continue to be allowed to tell all the Baptist, Lutheran, Jewish, even my God, the Islamic women who work for them in a secular institution that they own that forget about your insurance. If you need contraception, you can't have it, we own you. Here's an interesting article about the "truthfulness" of the Bishops on this issue:http://www.religiondispatches.org/dispatches/sarahposner/5654/ob_gyn_corrects_bishop's_false_claim_about_how_contraceptive_work/

The Catholic Church teaches that sterilization, artificial contraception, and abortion are morally wrong and that Catholics cannot be involved in them. The Obamacare law requires that all individuals purchase health insurance and that larger employers provide health insurance to their workers or face a penalty. The regulation would force Catholics to act against the teachings of their faith and against their consciences.

Which is a direct violation of the United States Constitution.

This whole liberal campaign to force the churches in the US to cave to government is a dangerous path.
