Each year as a part of the Grammy Award celebrations and week long events, the Recording Academy honours one musician for his or her contributions to music and charitable work as the MusiCares Person of the Year. The 2012 recipient is Trustees Award winner, Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement recipient, 14 time Grammy Award winner, BRIT Award winner, Gershwin Prize winner, and Kennedy Center Honours Sir Paul McCartney. The money raised from the dinner and silent auction goes to aid musicians with medical and financial help in time of need.
Along with the dinner and auction is a gala concert event with fellow musicians honouring the Person of the Year by performing the recipient’s music. Hosted by Eddie Izzard, the star sudded event includes performances by Tony Bennett, Coldplay, the Foo Fighters, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Jerry Douglas, Katy Perry, Duane Eddy, Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, Diana Krall, James Taylor, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Sergio Mendes, Cirqu du Soleil, and Sir Paul himself.
In being awarded the MusiCares Person of the Year, Sir Paul joins a list of prestigious music stars and legends that include Tony Bennett, Bono, Natalie Cole, Phil Collins, David Crosby, Neil Diamond, Gloria Estefan, Aretha Franklin, Don Henley, Billy Joel, Sir Elton, Quincy Jones, Luciano Pavarotti, Bonnie Raitt, Paul Simon, Sting, Barbra Streisand, James Taylor, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, and Neil Young.
