ROME: An Italian man threw his 16-month-old son off a bridge into the freezing cold Tiber river in Rome in a fit of rage following a row with his partner over custody, Italian media reported.

Roman Police have arrested a 26 years old man who allegedly threw his son in Tiber river. Identity of the man hasn’t been made public.

Divers are searching the frigid waters for the infant after a witness saw a man toss a baby into the river from a bridge, but their efforts were hampered by strong currents and poor weather conditions. 'We're still searching, we'll search for as long as we can, but the snowfall and rain we've had these past few days has swelled the river, making it very difficult indeed,' a spokesman for Rome's fire brigade service told AFP.

"It is an appalling story, which causes anguish and astonishment. It was an act of extreme cruelty," said the deputy mayor of Rome, Sveva Belvisio.
