Sri Lanka celebrates it's 64th independence day; frees 1,414 prisoners

As the Sri Lanka celebrates its 64th independence from Britain a 1,414 prisoners were released fits for the celebration freedom day.

In this freedom release one of the nation's high profile prisoner Sarath Fonseka was not in the list. Fonseka was a former army chief and seek for a presidential seat but lost. This was opposite to the early speculation that President Mahinda Rajapakse might use the Independece celebration to pardon Fonseka who becomes his rival in a presidential race.

Fonseka is serving his three year sentence for alleging that the president's brother ordered execution to the surrendering rebels. On his addition to his jail term is the irregularities when he was still a chief army which found guilty by the court martial.

Sri Lanka's President grants amnesty for those prisoners who are serving a light sentences.
