A 40-year old Greek tourist, at the last leg of her sojourn in north Island, was in a shock after all her belongings were stolen by locals who had befriended her in the Bay of Islands. She had lost 1500 Euros, her credit cards, passport and other belongings kept in her backpack from the room of the motel where she had been staying.
It seems she had made friends with some locals when she had asked for directions to Long Beach, a local scenic spot - later, one of the men accompanied her to her motel. Later she discovered her loss.
This is not an isolated case - there have been previous instances of tourists being robbed by locals. It reflects on the tourism potentials of the region which relies on tourism for its economy.
