Reports are coming in from Daily Kos, a progressive U.S. website, that Occupiers from Oakland were beaten, teargassed and refused medical treatment while detained by the Alameda County Sherriffs Office.
Here is the post as just published in the Daily Kos:
"I just got word from a friend of a friend about the conditions that arrestees from the actions. It isn't pretty, in fact it's disgusting.
"Just got out of Santa Rita Jail last night the prisoners from the Oakland Commune were being denied medications (some had seizures) while the guards said they didnt care if they died. Some people were brutally beaten. The put tear gas in the vents of my cell twice. They were keeping people without restrooms forcing them to shit and piss themselves or puke all over and stay in the same area...."
There's at least one Kossack who was arrested, allie123 is her nick here I believe, and she had spoken about being denied medicine the last time she was sent to Santa Rita Jail. Just to be clear, the Jail is run by the Alameda County Sheriffs Department, not the OPD, so this is yet another law enforcement agency abusing protesters and it is absolutely disgusting.
Sorry for the short diary, but I don't have much more info right now. I'll update as I hear more." Daily Kos
As it becomes more and more apparent to law enforcement agencies and mayors such as Oakland's Jean Quan, who has this week threatened that anyone found protesting in future be thrown out of the city for good, that the more you try to stop the movement and the protests, the stronger they become. It appears that efforts to crush the will of protesters have been ramped up. Either police routinely treat prisoners with such cruelty and lack of respect for their basic human rights, or in the case of Occupy protesters, they have been instructed to do so.
One thing for sure, these people were kettled into a corner, told to disperse, and then arrested when they were unable to leave. Four hundred U.S. citizens were tied with their hands behind their backs like criminals and arrested for peacefully excercising their rights to assembly and free speech. This is entrapment, of the most basic kind, and these people will likely be suing these police departments for wrongful arrest in the near future, along with perhaps afew other charges, such as violation of human rights, abuse and torture.
Is this really America in the 21st century?
If these allegations prove to be true, then it is a very sad indication of how low the mighty country of the brave and the "free" has fallen. And now that it's all legal to detain American citizens without so much as a howdeedoo, thanks to the newly signed DOAA - remember, the one Obama signed on New Year's Eve while everyone was ringing in the New Year? - well, who will save America from herself?
