Reactor #2 at the Byron Generating Station 95 miles northwest of Chicago was shut down earlier today after the reactor released radiation into the atmosphere. Exelon's Energy nuclear reactor had to be shut down because of an electrical insulator that failed to work.
The insulator fell off of the reactor, which caused the nuclear material from within the reactor to overheat. To prevent a meltdown, steam had to be released from the reactor. However, the steam contained levels of tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen.
Tritium is so powerful that it can cause cellular damage if it makes contact with anybody, which could result in deformities and cancer. Nevertheless, the officials in Ogle County have stated that the people in the area are not in danger.
They can make that claim, but it was the third time in four years that this reactor has raised some concerns with federal officials.
