‘‘The Christian religion is no longer the badge of weaklings and enthusiasts, but of distinction, enforcing respect.” –William McKinley

Those who embrace the Christian faith have often suffered persecution. In fact, that is the reason why many of our earliest settlers migrated to this continent. Those brave and hardy souls desired the freedom to worship the Lord according to the dictates of their own hearts.

And although the meek may inherit the earth, they didn’t inherit much of anything in the New World. These settlers had to earn their daily bread in a brutal and primitive environment.

The Pilgrims endured many hardships in order to thrive in America. Surviving the long journey across unforgiving seas was only the beginning of the challenges they faced as a people.

They endured death, hunger, disease, and loneliness. However, they willingly faced these hardships for the privilege to worship God, free from the Church of England.

History teaches us Christianity grew and flourished under the threat of Roman persecution. In addition, Christianity also thrived in the hardships of the New World.

These early Christians also gave us the framework and leadership to establish the greatest Republic in human civilization.

America’s history is His story!

Thank you for these reminders that I have not suffered near what the early church did.
