In most cases a birth is a fairly routine procedure. A woman in Peru delivered a boy three years ago without knowing that the child had a twin. A condition known as “fetus in fetus” hid the twin for three years. The condition occurs in approximately one in every five hundred thousand live births.

Doctor Carlos Astocondor, at Las Mercedes Hospital in Peru, found the twin in the stomach of its three-year-old brother. The ‘parasitic’ twin is approximately 25 centimeters in length and weighs about 680 grams. Hair can be seen on the cranium, eyes and a few bones can also be seen.

As the fetus was absorbed by the other fetus inside the womb development of the heart, brain, lungs and intestines was arrested and they did not develop, Dr Astocondor said.
