An off-the-cuff idea by a flight attendant to perform a Bollywood song and dance number on board a Finnair flight has gone on to become an instant Youtube sensation. By the way, Bollywood is the popular tag given to the Indian film industry.
It all started when the staff on a Finnair flight from Helsinki to New Delhi in a feeling of jubilation decided to celebrate India's 63rd Republic Day (26 Jan, 2012) by performing a choreographed dance number and when they did so, it went on to rake in hundreds of thousands of views world-wide.
It was flight attendant Helena Kaartinen who first came up with the innovative idea. Kaartinen thought that it would be a good way for the airline staff to show that the Finnish people too understood something about the Indian culture. 'It was a good way to show respect,' she explained to New York Times.
NY Times quoting the Finnair staffer informs that Kaartinen then discussed the idea with a friend Manish Gawde who happens to be Bollywood dance choreographer. Later, both Kaartinen and Gawde collaborated with each other to develop the intricate dance number.
In fact, Manish Gawde assisted in perfecting the final song and dance routine, after which the Finnair cabin crew uploaded the results of their test dance on YouTube ahead of the final Flight AY201.
The original dance number is performed to the tune of the hit Hindi song “Deewangi Deewangi”, which is from the flick ‘Om Shanti Om,’ a film directed and choreographed byand stars the Bollywood ‘King Khan’ Shahrukh Khan along with model/ actress . .
However, even the Finnair cabin crew might not have dreamt of the mind-blowing response their dance would receive. Within two days of the video being uploaded on to YouTube, it went on to get a whopping 1.5 million hits. More than 7,000 users have even expressed their liking for the Bollywood dance number, performed by the exuberant Finnish dames.
