Night of Anger in Oakland: Protests Continue for Second Day after Hundreds Arrested

Sunday morning UPDATE: After last night's arrests of up to 500 peaceful protesters, the march continues this morning as hundreds more people gather and begin to reassemble to express their rights to protest. Anger is mounting towards Oakland Police, who corralled some three hundred into a dead end last night and then arrested people for 'failing to disperse' which was basically an impossibility as the group was cornered and trapped by police. There were afew people who had thrown objects at the police, however some sentiment leans towards the fact that those may have been either blac block anarchists or even police 'provocateurs', agents planted to cause trouble from within the ranks. Certainly the Occupy folks on livestream last night were horrified to learn of these individuals, as well as of the flag burning that took place outside city hall. The general sentiment appeared to be that these were the actions of afew individuals and were in no way condoned nor sanctioned by the movement.

Nonetheless we are getting reports that police used excessive force and also smoke bombs and tear gas were used. Stay tuned on livestream as the action continues in the city that has become synonymous with solidarity with Occupy Wall St.

Tonight's protest in Oakland was intended to be a 'move in' night, as an attempt was made to claim an old abandoned building long left and forgotten so the movement could have a permanent location. Police were surrounding the building when protesters arrived. Oakland PD having of course read about the plans on social media, which as we all know is being monitored by police.

Protesters escaped the first trap as Oakland PD attempted to kettle a large group who escaped over fences only to be trapped outside the doors to the YMCA. For a brief exhilarating moment it looked as though the doors to the Y were open and that the crowd of several hundred might actually escape the robocops who had corralled them into the dead end. Suddenly the authoritative voice of a police officer announced that they were all under arrest. Some women screamed as police descended shouting for the peaceful protesters to 'submit' to the arrests.

Agent provocateurs run rampant through the streets, one having grabbed an i-phone right from the hands of one of the livestream operators, 'Freedom' is her name. Thousands of people were watching the stream when the phone was kidnapped as a fleet footed long haired man snatched it and ran with it, as Freedom is a very popular blogger and livestream operator for Occupy LA.

Several hundred arrests took place outside the YMCA in the last hour when suddenly news that protesters had broken into the city hall. Someone is burning the American Flag in Frank Ogawa Plaza.
