Realizing that most Americans certainly won’t care what I think, nevertheless, I am hereby endorsing Newt Gingrich for President.
Of the remaining candidates for the Republican nomination, Gingrich is the only one who will fight to restore our country with the same degree of passion he gives to winning the presidency.
This past week, I have been appalled at the Republican Establishment’s coordinated attacks on former Speaker Newt Gingrich. Their “schlock and awe” campaign has been unkind, unfair, untrue, and unprincipled.
For many years now, I have been a great fan and supporter of Ann Coulter. However, the woman, whose writings and keen intellect I have admired for years, has come completely unhinged. Despite her past reputation for brilliance and hard-hitting principle, Coulter’s attacks on Newt have absolutely no basis in thought or reason. In fact, she sounds a lot more like a whiny, Pelosi-liberal than she does a Tea Party favorite.
Then there is the New Jersey governor, Chris Christie. How can a man who routinely complains about his opponents’ tasteless attacks on his weight engage in such petty and unsubstantiated allegations on a fellow Republican? His seemingly-deranged appearance on Meet the Press, which also earned the scorn of Sarah Palin, had more in common with Little Chrissy Matthews than it did the thoughts of a conservative Republican.
Both of those individuals have lost much of the respect I formerly held for them.
But this column is not intended to talk about a pair of small individuals with massive egos, who are now acting like Tories during the American Revolution or Frenchmen who collaborated with the Nazis during World War II.
And those analogies are certainly apt descriptions of the times we are facing as a country.
America is currently a nation under siege.
Better than any of the other candidates, Newt Gingrich understands the dangers faced by our Republic.
When it comes to this country’s past and its future, Newt says the sort of things I often write. I write about the country with the heart of a poet. Newt Gingrich writes and speaks about the country in much the same way. It is obvious that we both share the same concern about our country’s economic future.
Unlike Mitt Romney, the statements made by Newt Gingrich don’t appear to be focus group tested and poll-driven. He says things that are courageous and bold. His statements are passionate and optimistic.
From the Massachusetts governor, you get someone who is smooth and polished. He is much too careful to risk offending someone, anyone!
Romney speaks from his pollsters; Gingrich speaks from the heart.
Furthermore, it is Newt’s passion that leads him to occasionally say things that leave you bewildered. Yet he is the only candidate who truly and deeply inspires us. Newt clearly has more in common with Patrick Henry than he does with Thomas Jefferson.
However, it is this delightful mixture of passion and humanity that would make Gingrich an outstanding president. His flaws keep him anchored to reality; Newt’s vision makes him extraordinary.
If Gingrich had been alive during Colonial times, there is no doubt in my mind Newt would have been one of the Sons of Liberty. No doubt he would have been knee-deep in the revolt against King George. Moreover, I am confident he would have donned Indian garb and feathers, taking his place among those throwing cases of tea into Boston Harbor.
Gingrich talks about our nation like someone who’s experienced the American dream first-hand and remains forever grateful. His intimate knowledge of our nation’s history gives him a special insight into setting a proper course for our future.
And when it comes to the Reagan legacy, Gingrich is as capable as anybody in America of taking up his mantle.
How dare any of these Republican Establishment types dare to challenge Newt’s right to claim this title? For when it comes to deciding “What Would Reagan Do,” perhaps you should ignore the imposters and turn to the experts.
Nancy Reagan said that her beloved “Ronnie” passed the torch to Newt Gingrich. Michael Reagan himself endorsed the Gingrich candidacy.
America is facing a perilous future unless we select a leader who is courageous enough to make bold and sweeping changes that will restore the United States to greatness.
I don’t believe you will get that from Mitt Romney.
Newt certainly knows what it is to be falsely maligned. He has confronted the bitter hatred and venom of the media. The speaker has also withstood the vicious attacks, even those directed his way from those in his own party.
Yet despite these things, Newt continues to stand tall. He continues to care about the future that he leaves for his children and grandchildren. He wants the very best for them and all of America.
Now is not the time for timid measures. Now is not the time for caution in confronting our challenges. It is a time that calls for bold strokes and principled leadership.
In these troubled times, the leader America needs will have to possess these qualities.
That man is Newt Gingrich.
