MANILA PHILIPPINES-Mendoza’s “Captive,” that Stars French actresswith Filipino actors Ronnie Lazaro, Mon Confiado, Raymond Bagatsing Angel Aquino and Sid Lucero, will have its world premiere at the Berlin festival on February 9-19, with films like; Antonio Chavarrias’ “Dictado” from Spain and Edwin’s “Postcards From the Zoo” from Indonesia, along side,Rommel Tolentino’s “Nono,” was included in the Generation section of the Film Fest this year.
“Captive,” formerly titled “Prey,” tells the story of a foreign aid worker (Huppert) who gets kidnapped, with Filipinos, by the Abu Sayyaf in Mindanao -Capturing the Basilan Kidnappings in a different Angle.
30 years ago Bernal's "Himala" grabbed an important slot in the Berlin Film Fest (second only to the Cannes Film Fest); “Being included in the main competition of a major festival will help boost awareness of Filipino cinema. It will make global audiences regard Filipino films more seriously. It will open doors for other Filipino filmmakers as well,” Mendoza told PDI in an interview last year.
Winning the Caligari Prize in Berlin’s Forum section for “Tirador” in 2008, in 2009, he won best director at the Cannes International Film Festival for “Kinatay.”
A noted Filipino Director Brillante Mendoza has done promising films since 2005 -He Revolutionalised a Genre in Film making that spawned the Likes of Brocka, Bernal and Celso Ad Castillo adding a different kind of paradox- His works are formidable, breath taking in a sense.
