A Separation is an Iranian film, filled with tensions, drama and suspense. The movie is about a married couple’s decision to separate because the wife wants to move elsewhere while the husband wants to stay and take care of his ailing father. Their eleven-year-old daughter is often caught in the middle, hoping her parents will eventually get back together, although she prefers to stay with her father. Complications happen when the man hires a caretaker for his father, and this caretaker has her own problems, which aggravates their situation. As they try to figure out what to do, as well as get to the truth behind all the lies, the stress in the whole case appears to further mess up the couple’s marriage, which I assume they eventually filed for divorce. The ending is open-ended because the judge asks the girl which parent she would rather live with, and she tells the judge that she would rather answer this question privately without either parent in the room. The parents wait outside until the judge tells them their daughter’s answer, which is not revealed in the movie.

This movie recently won a Golden Globe in Best Foreign Language Film category, as well as acknowledged as best film in the 2011 Berlin Film Festival and won a Golden Bear award.
