Hundreds of supporters of ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi took the city on Monday evening, Bani Walid and hung out there, the old green flag - AP agency reportedtoday, citing government officials.
On Monday, four people were killed when Gaddafi supporters and troops loyal to the new authorities clashed in the city, which during the nine-month civil war was the bastion of the former dictator's forces.
According to a witness, which relied on Reuters, the clashes occurred when members ofthe Libyan branch of the National Council (NRL) arrested several supporters of the lateGaddafi, which provoked others in the group to take up arms.
According to the head of local authorities in Bani Walid al-Mubarak Fatamniego well armed and trained Gaddafi loyalists took control of the city.
Commander of NRL Ali al-Fatamni, which tracks the position of Benghazi, announced that he had lost contact with the forces that are in the city.
Bani Walid is located about 150 miles southeast of Tripoli. Gaddafi's opponents fought forthis city four months.
