What is UC2B? UC2B is an intergovernmental consortium of the University of
Illinois and the cities of Urbana and Champaign working collaboratively to the
building and functioning of an open-access fiber optic broadband network
throughout the Champaign Urbana area including Savoy.
Let's face it! No underserved neighborhood, whether in a rural or city
community, should be without an open-access fiber optic broadband network.
Understanding the fact that these are changing time in this new 21st century,
every person, regardless of class or social status, should have accessibility to
this superhighway of information through modern technology. Whether one
chooses to use this technology or not, he or she will always have it within
This new fiber-optic "backbone" infrastructure, which is the foundation of
the UC2B network, will be built with a $22.5 million grant money that was
made possible through the U.S. Department of Commerce's national telecom-
munications and information administration. With the state of Illinois way
behind in paying its own bills since 2010, it is nice to know that they are think-
ing about folk in these small cities by providing a $3.5 million grant along with
other local matching dollars which added an additional $3.4 million dollars to
complete the funding of this project.
The contractor for this project is Western Utility Contractors, Inc. from
University Park, Illinois. Assistant city engineer, Tony Vandeventer of the
City of Champaign Public Works Department expects little disruption during
the construction phase. Mr. Vandeventer also said that construction work in
this area, the northend of Chempaign, is expected to take a couple of
months to complete. He also claim that the installation of this entire fiber
optic network within the city and township is expected to be completed by
February 2013. According to recent sources from the local WILL radio NPR
news satellite, some neighborhoods could have access to some parts of this
network as early as April 2012.
Perhaps citizens in Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy should thank the
policy making committee members consisting of representatives from the
University of Illinois, the city of Champaign, and the city of Urbana which
makes up the UC2B consortium for the implementation of this project which
will greatly enhance the community as a whole. This new fiber-optice network
will be directly connected to over 150 community anchor institutions as well as
public safety and government agencies.
