Ukrainian women rage against Indian prostitute 'slur'

Ukrainian feminist group Femen isn’t pleased with India’s latest decision to tighten visa application screening for women aged 15-40, introduced as a measure attempting to curb the inflow of sex workers. Despite the frosty temperature of minus five degrees Celsius, Femen activists braved to once again speak up their mind in their usual way – by topless protest.

On a cold winter day four young women occupied the balcony of the Indian residence in Kiev, and protested against the move they see as “an insult for all women”.

“We are not prostitutes”, the bare breasted activists shouted, waving the Indian national flag. At the same time, the banners they held up read: “Ukraine is not a brothel" and “Delhi, close your brothels” (video).

The protest didn’t last long as the police came quite quickly and detained all four protesters.

Earlier this week the Russian media reported India’s embassies in four ex-Soviet states, including Ukraine, were instructed to “thoroughly screen applications of women who are 15-40 years of age” in order to make sure they are “genuine tourists” and not potential sex workers, RIA Novosti revealed.

Reportedly, the police sources in New Delhi said there are 3,500 prostitutes from former Soviet states in the capital alone.

“The problem of prostitution in India doesn’t depend on women from Ukraine, Russia or Kazakhstan. It is directly linked with criminal impunity for the pimping business within India itself,” Femen said in a statement.
