The hartal invoked in Kerala to support and promote the agitation for a new dam at Mullaperiyar went off peaceful. More importantly, it evoked mixed response. The city seemed quite active and alive, with vehicles plying all around, schools and offices functioning as usual.
Many of the commoners think that the political parties here are not intereseted in the welfare of the people. Therefore, they did not support the cause of the dam and the hartal. 'If it were for some petty issues related to their party, every political party would have been in the forefront fighting for their cause' said Mr. Maneesh M Nair working at Loyola Extension Services, Sreekariyam, Trivandrum.
However, if Mullaperiyar is an issue that needs wider political and civilian attention, it is the responsibility of people alone, to fight and find a solution. No politician would be able to find a solution for this.
