Bomb Kills at Least 53 Pilgrims in South Iraq

At least 53 Shi’iete pilgrims, many of them children, are reported to have lost their lives and at least 137 are seriously injured in an Iraqi suicide bomb attack in the town of Zubeir in Basra.

This increases the growing unrest and tension among sectarian groups subsequent to the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq and poses questions of whether the Iraqis had taken a correct decision to bid goodbye to the US forces. It is basically the ongoing tussle between the two groups in their fight for supremacy and gaining control of Iraq.

This attack, which had the markings of a Sunni attack, had been planned to coincide with the last of the 40 days of Arbain when thousands of Shi’ite pilgrims assemble to visit the Iraqi city of Kerbala.
