Measles reached a sixth province in the DRC

After a mission led from 27 to 29 December 2011 in Faradje health zone, in Eastern Province, NGO Médecins sans frontières (MSF) confirmed the presence of measles in that area, according to a OCHA press release of Wednesday, January 11, 2012.

During the last trimester of 2011, there are 210 suspects cases with 3 deaths in Faradje health zone.

MSF has trained some nurses and given some medicine to the health area care cases, according to the same press release.

In April 2011, the DRC minister of Public Health, Victor Makwenge Kaput, recognized the reappearance of measles in the country. More 16.000 suspects case of measles have been identified from January to February 2011 through the country, which 107 deceases with 194 positive cases.

In April, measles epidemic is riffing mainly in health zones of five provinces: Katanga, Maniema, South- Kivu, Eastern and Western Kasai. Now, measles reaches Eastern Province and there are six provinces where measles is present.
