It has happened once again in drug land Mexico – a brawl broke up in a prison between two groups of inmates and 31 of them are reported to be dead with another 13 injured and battling for life.
The use of improvised weapons added to the mayhem – weapons like makeshift knives, clubs and stones were used freely.
The incident in the penitentiary in the Gulf coast city of Altamira has shown up the authorities in poor light – the groups who engaged in the free-for-all belonged to the drug cartels of the rival Zeta and Gulf gangs.
This port of Altamira is believed to be the point used by the drug cartels to offload supplies of cocaine and chemicals used to make methamphetamine into Mexico. It seems the state of Tamaulipas has been the scene of many more bloody battles between the drug cartels, especially the Gulf and Zeta gangs who once worked together and were allies in crime.
