It is a sad note on which we are heralding in 2012, the New Year. It is the tale of misery and suffering of Sahar Gul, a teenage bride of Afghanistan and reveals a hitherto unknown and dark side of how women are mistreated in Afghanistan. Sahar is only 15-years old and her brother had reportedly sold her off in marriage for US$5000 seven months back. Poor Sahar was kept locked in the toilet by her mother-in-law who even tortured her by pulling out her finger nails and by burning her with cigarette stubs. She was also denied food and water. The child bride has been rescued from the basement if her husband’s house in north eastern Baghlan province and is under treatment in hospital – she is suffering from severe loss of blood, multiple burns and injuries and is traumatized and a psychological wreck.
