At least 17 ​​people were killed and about 80 were injured in a fire and explosion inthe largest city in Burma, Rangoon, in the south of the country - in the night, police said on Thursday morning local time.



Fire and explosion occurred in a state warehouse in the eastern part of town, on Thursday at approx. 2 am - reported authorities. The fire quickly spread to nearby buildings, including the shipyard and manufacturing facilities.

Firefighters were able to control the fire, but not yet extinguished. Emergency services do not stop in the search for victims. Among the killed and wounded a number of firefighters who died in an explosion while trying to extinguish the flames.

According to witnesses first heard a powerful explosion had occurred followed by several smaller ones. The explosions were felt in the eastern and central parts of Rangoon.

Cause of fire is yet unknown.
