says, and I paraphrase, "The founder's vision for America was to be the light of the world - an example to all nations of how a nation can thrive on liberty; live in peace, with power being in the voice of the people. The idea that somebody would use force to make other countries act like we do, makes individuals act like we think they should, and rejects the whole notion of liberty.”
We have lost our way. What ever happened to the golden rule? You know, treat others as you would want to be treated.
I expressed my support for Dr. Ron Paul on Christmas with family and I got replies like, "He loves Muslims, your going to be speaking Chinese soon, he's too old, and we need the oil."
Yes, my uncle said, "We need the oil"- that wasn't a typo! After explaining to him our current asinine foreign policy he agreed, then said, "But we need the oil!"
"What?! We need the oil?" As a veteran in the Marine Corps I was taken back by this - he actually admitted that our intervention in the Middle East was for oil.
I thanked him for his honesty but had to make sure he understood what he just said, I asked, "So you mean to tell me that you're alright with pissing off the Middle East since 1953 therefore inciting hatred which causes blowback through terrorism for oil?"
Without hesitation he replied, "yes!"
"What about the golden rule (since I knew he possessed such values)?" I asked.
"Well we're both right - but if we don't control the oil we'll be taken over by China," he replied.
Then I pointed at my brother Dane who is an Active duty Army specialist and said, "So you're alright that 5000 military members like Dane and I die for Oil?"
Although the rest of the night went great I was still flabbergasted that my family's values didn't seem to apply when it came to the expansion of the American Empire and oil control.
But why? Well my family is filled with Corporate minded men who undoubtedly must feel War is good for business, must think trading blood for oil is okay.
It's fear. They fear that their jobs, positions and ranks will be jeopardized if we are not intervening in these countries. I wish they could see that their Neocon beliefs are counter productive - their views on this are like a growing cancer that only Liberty can heal.
Many people in the world believe we are the terrorist. We are the world's police much like the Empire in Star Wars was to their galaxy - we go around to other countries (not planets) telling others how to act and behave, otherwise suffer the consequences! How is this Christian? How is this Just? And why do we wonder why they burn our flag?
Let us get out of our own way, step back and treat others as we would want to be treated.
