The Finnish authorities have launched an investigation after discovering 69 Patriot surface to air missiles and 150 tons of explosives on board a ship flying the British flag at the port of Kotka, 120 kilometers east of Helsinki.

The M / S Liberty Thor, owned by the firm Thorco Shipping, docked in the port of the Baltic Sea on December 15 after starting two days later at the port of Emden, Germany. He was heading towards the port of Shanghai, China.

The investigation is moving towards a case of illegal export of military equipment. Finnish law requires an authority of the Ministry of Defense for the transit of such cargo on its territory

"At this point, we do not know where the cargo was loaded on the cargo or the Thor Liberty planned to unload before reaching destination in China," said the head of the unit fight against Finnish customs crime, Petri Lounatm

The longshoremen are the ones who notified the authorities after discovering explosives – Nitroguanadine the strong potential explosive - while they were loading a cargo of mooring chains. These explosives were also improperly stored, said the Finnish authorities.

After the first intervention of the authorities of Transportation Safety in Finland, a team of customs, police and experts from the Defense Forces conducted a detailed investigation Wednesday aboard the freighter.

" We started to question the crew. With further investigation,we will decide any arrests, "said Lounatmaa. Thirty-two crew members were aboard the M / S Liberty Thor. Interrogation will continue
