Philippines - The Philippine Permanent Mission in Geneva reported that , upon the invitation of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Director General William Lacy Swing, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F del Rosario adressed the high level segment of the 100th session of the IOM council in Geneva Switzerland this month December 6 this year .
The special occasion marked IOM 60th anniversary
Secretary del Rosario expressed support for the stablishment of a new IOM Emergency Funding Mechanism that would further enhance the Organization capacity to assist gouvernment in their efforts to rescue migrants in crises situations. He also shared the Philippines experience developing migrants -centered migration pollicies and institutions.
He started that while the Philippines continues to exert all efforts to protect its citizens choosing to migrate abroad responding to the worlwide demand for migrant labor and expertise such efforts would come to naught if other countries particularly distination countries , do not also do their part.
Secretary del Rosario called on the International Community to acknowledge and respect the human dignity and contribution of migrants to their host destination societies.
We have to remember that in a global era people infact, are the best transmitters of knowledge information. Migration can be be an engine of growth in the current economics downtrend . We need more international dialogue and cooperation aimed and securing the protection and welfare of migrants as well as on harnessing the possitive benefits of migration for human developtment . Ultimately migration must put people first said Sec del Rosario.
At the meeting , the Philippines was also re-elected to the IOM Executive Committee
